Your home is more than a place to live—it’s a reflection of your life. Here’s how to turn sentimental pieces and intentional choices into an interior designed space that tells your story.
Have you ever walked into someone’s home and felt like you knew them better just by being there?
That’s what great design should do—it should tell your story, even before you say a word.
In this episode of Designing in 5D, I got personal. I reflected on how the most meaningful designs aren’t always the trendiest or the most polished—they’re the ones that reflect who we are, what we love, and what we’ve lived.
Let’s talk about how you can turn your home into a living, breathing reflection of your journey.
1. Your Space Should Speak for You
It’s easy to fall into the trap of “safe” design—white shaker cabinets, neutral furniture, and mass-produced wall art. But when every home starts to look like the one next door, it loses the opportunity to mean something.
We want your space to say, “This is me.” Not “This is what Pinterest told me to do.”
2. Start with Sentimental
One of my favorite pieces in my home came from my grandma. She had these copper butterflies that I loved since childhood. When she moved into assisted living, I asked if I could have them. Rather than tucking them away in a drawer, I turned them into custom artwork by mounting them on canvas and framing it in an acrylic shadow box. It hangs in my bathroom where I see it every day—and every time I do, I think of her.
The lesson? Don’t hide your memories. Display them with intention.
3. Create Conversation Moments
Another client of ours had recently lost her husband. She had travel photos she loved, so we helped her turn them into a gallery wall with thick white mats where she handwrote special memories around the borders. Now, when guests come into her home, they stop to read, reflect, and connect. That wall isn’t just art—it’s a story.
4. Curate, Don’t Clutter
Being intentional doesn’t mean putting everything on display. It means selecting a few meaningful pieces—letters, recipes, keepsakes—and giving them space to shine. Whether it’s turning your child’s artwork into wallpaper, laser-engraving grandma’s recipe onto a cutting board, or framing vintage cabinet doors, there are endless ways to infuse history without the clutter.
5. Vacation Rentals & Commercial Spaces Need Stories Too
This concept isn’t just for your personal home. When I started working on vacation rentals in Florida, I noticed how many looked exactly the same—beach signs, teal everything, no real personality.
But what if we treated these properties like experiences?
I once visited a Star Wars-themed vacation rental called Shore Wars. Upstairs was amazing—full of fun, themed decor—but it didn’t carry through to the rest of the house. Imagine the potential if that storytelling continued throughout. People crave immersive experiences—and design is how we create them.
6. Use Design to Brand Your Multifamily or Commercial Space
For multifamily buildings, lobbies, or restaurants, intentional design is your brand. One of my favorite projects was Station 121 in Des Moines. It’s a former Mack Truck building that we transformed with reclaimed barnwood, custom lighting made from tree stumps, and vintage bulldog figurines that nod to the building’s past. Every detail told a story—and people felt it.
7. Design With Intention, Magic, and Meaning
So here’s your homework:
-
Find one item in your home that has meaning.
-
Ask yourself: Is it hidden in a closet? Or could it become a design feature?
-
And if your space feels disconnected from your story, we’d love to help you change that.
