It’s Time to Prioritize the Most Important Relationship—Your Own

We spend so much of our lives focusing on others—family, work, responsibilities—that we forget the one person who needs our attention the most: ourselves.

For years, I thought if I just worked harder, pushed through, and kept going, everything would fall into place. But instead, I ran myself into the ground, burned out, and felt completely lost. Something had to change.

When Life Forces You to Slow Down

In 2019, my world felt like it was falling apart. My business faced a major upheaval, my marriage was strained, and I was working 120-hour weeks just to stay afloat. I was exhausted, angry, and barely surviving.

I told myself I just needed to work harder—that somehow, I could outwork the stress. But by September, my body had given me a hard STOP.

It became clear: I wasn’t just exhausted, I was completely disconnected from myself.

The Power of Unplugging & Reconnecting

That realization led me to one of the biggest shifts in my life: learning to step away, slow down, and truly listen to what I needed.

I turned to nature, solitude, and reflection—taking intentional time away from the noise to regain clarity. My unplugged retreats took me from the fear-filled roads of Glacier National Park to the healing stillness of Tellico Plains. Each trip wasn’t just about travel—it was about resetting my mind, body, and spirit.

And I learned something powerful: self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

The Hardest Lesson: Advocating for Myself

For most of my life, I was a people pleaser—prioritizing everyone else’s needs, making sure everyone else was happy. But in doing so, I ignored my own needs.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this: If you don’t stand up for yourself, no one else will.

✔ Learning to say no
✔ Letting go of guilt for choosing myself
✔ Recognizing that boundaries don’t make you selfish—they make you strong

Create Your Own Retreat—Starting Today

You don’t need to book an expensive getaway or wait for the perfect moment. Your retreat can start right now, exactly where you are.

🌿 Turn off your phone for an hour—disconnect from distractions.
🌿 Step outside, barefoot if you can—connect with the world around you.
🌿 Write down three things you need—not for work, not for family, but for you.
🌿 Make space for silence—meditate, pray, or just sit with your thoughts.
🌿 Say no to something that drains you—and yes to something that fills your soul.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s the foundation for everything else in your life. When you are rested, whole, and present, you show up better for the people and things you love.
