From Outdated to Award-Winning: The Transformation of 339 House on Grand

When we first walked through the 339 House on Grand, it was clear this 1950s home had potential—but it needed a thoughtful vision to bring it to life. Brought in during the early stages of the remodel, our team at Elizabeth Erin Designs worked closely with Alair Homes Des Moines to reimagine the home from the ground up. The result? A timeless transformation that earned the title of Most Dramatic Change in the 2025 Tour of Remodeled Homes. This project truly exemplifies a Des Moines home remodel.

Before + After: Living Room & Fireplace

This space tells one of the most powerful stories in the entire home. What was once a confined living area with awkward flow became a stunning focal point where architectural details shine. By relocating the staircase and reimagining the fireplace design, we created a natural center for gathering that now feels warm, open, and intentional.

Our first step in this project was collaborating with the builder to determine the project’s price point and goals. That conversation shaped every decision moving forward—from how far to go with reconfiguring the layout to which design elements would make the most lasting impact. We wanted to preserve the traditional charm of separate rooms while improving the function of key spaces. By moving the kitchen and redesigning the stairs, we brought flow, functionality, and balance to the home’s layout.

Before + After: Dining Room

We preserved the home’s sense of intimacy by keeping distinct spaces for dining and gathering but elevated the look through refined finishes, fresh paint, and cohesive lighting. The result is a dining room that feels timeless—perfect for family dinners and entertaining alike.

Every detail was approached with purpose. We selected exterior paint colors, shutters, lighting, and even convinced the builder to add a portico to the front façade—introducing architectural depth and curb appeal. Inside, we collaborated with an Amish cabinet company to design custom cabinetry that balanced craftsmanship and budget. We selected hardware, flooring, paint colors, trim profiles, and lighting, and worked with Luke Brothers Flooring to choose timeless tile and carpet combinations that bring texture and warmth to each space.

Before + After: Mudroom

Every remodel needs spaces that ground the design—and the mudroom became just that. Designed for functionality and ease, it blends durable materials with thoughtful detail, creating a space that’s both practical and beautiful.

Our process emphasized communication and clarity. By creating detailed specifications and design ideas early on, the builder was able to get accurate estimates before committing to vendors. During construction, we provided installation specs for tile, lighting, and accessories to help subcontractors achieve the proper placement and polish.

Before + After: Bonus Room or Secondary Space

This space highlights how small changes can make a big impact. Updated trim, refined paint selections, and new lighting gave the room a refreshed sense of balance and warmth—proof that great design lives in the details.

The result is a home that feels elegant, updated, and timeless—a space where modern functionality meets classic design, and every decision reflects intention.
